One of the Best States for Business

From a moderate climate to a rich history and diverse recreational activities, North Carolina is an excellent place to live. It’s also a great place to do business. Whether drawn by the mild winters, low cost of living, or the 300-plus miles of coastline, employees of all sorts provide a talented workforce to companies that choose to make this eastern state their home. Furthermore, low construction costs help keep new businesses developing.

In 2014, Forbes ranked North Carolina as the #3 Best State for Businesss. The article credits recent trends in migration and a sharp drop in the unemployment rate. Writer Kurt Badenhausen states: “North Carolina has the smallest union workforce in the U.S. in percentage terms. The resulting benefit is labor costs that are 16% below the national average-third lowest in the country. North Carolina has ranked in the top five overall each year of our Best States study.”

Encouraging Growth

Economically speaking, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, North Carolina’s total gross state product was $424.9 billion, making it the ninth wealthiest state in terms of gross domestic product. The state is also the country’s #1 producer of textiles, but other businesses are also highly successful, including chemical manufacturers, electrical equipment, paper, and pulp and paper products; agriculture has recently seen a resurgence as well. The information and biotechnology industries are also well represented, especially in the Research Triangle Park, located between Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. This globally prominent research center is home to over 170 companies and federal agencies and is the largest and oldest continuously operating research and science park in the United States.

If you are looking to grow a business in the North Carolina area, there are many resources to assist you. The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina operates the Thrive program, to encourage citizens and companies to live and work in the state. Business Link North Carolina, also part of the EDPNC, also maintains resources and development opportunities, including networking and mentorship programs. Their long list of localized resources is an excellent place to start.
